Vein Anatomy: Deep Veins

  Previous topic Next topic

There are 2 systems of veins in the legs. The deep system lies within the muscles and the superficial system lies within the fat layer above the muscles and below the skin. The deep system accounts for 90% of the blood returning the the heart. When people talk about "blood clots" in the legs, they are usually referring to the deep system. When the valves in the deep system are faulty, surgical options are limited.
