How Can Varicose Veins be Prevented?

  Previous topic Next topic

what can prevent

There is no known prevention for varicose veins, since a family history of varicose or spider veins seems to be the predominant indicator that you will develop them. Improving your circulation and muscle tone can reduce the risk of getting varicose veins or getting additional ones. Exercise like walking is a great way to improve blood circulation in your legs. Your doctor can recommend an appropriate exercise level for you.

Other helpful recommendations include:

Avoid high heels. Shoes with lower heels work calf muscles more.
Don't wear constrictive garments around your calves or groin that can interfere with blood flow.
Elevate your legs three or four times a day for several minutes to improve circulation.
Avoid long periods of sitting or standing and make a point of changing your position frequently to encourage blood flow.
Maintain a healthy weight to take unnecessary pressure off your veins.
