LASER Therapy for the Treatment of Varicose Veins

laser therapy

Less invasive techniques generally allow varicose veins to be dealt with on an outpatient basis. LASERs (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) have become an important tool in the treatment of vein disease. The latest major breakthrough in this field is laser endovenous occlusion of the saphenous vein (LES-Vein©) and a successful safe alternative to stripping. This scar-free treatment can be performed in the office setting using only local anesthesia. The patient can return to normal activities the next day in most cases.

This procedure consists of inserting a thin laser fiber optic catheter through laser guidance into the varicose vein and placing the catheter tip near the area of the highest incompetent valve. Then, while pulling the fiber optic catheter through the vein, laser energy is directed to the inside of the vein wall causing it to heat, collapse, and seal shut. Results of this form of treatment have been very successful. A similar procedure using radiofrequency (RF) energy is also being used.
